William Sweigart Obituary

William Sweigart, age 81 of Newville, gained his angel’s wings on August 10, 2022.  Bill was born in Lancaster to the late Carl and Mildred (Smuck) Sweigart on August 23, 1940.  In addition to his parents, Bill is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 28 years, Linda Sweigart.  Bill is survived by his three children:  Alan Sweigart, Randy (Cindy) Sweigart, and Wanda (Kevin) Hansel, all of Mechanicsburg; four stepchildren:  Harry Allen Baughman of Shamokin, Nanette Eilene Baughman of Blain, Jess Lee Baughman of Loysville, and Douglas Ray Baughman of Blain; 18 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and a brother, David Sweigart of Lancaster.

Upon completion of high school, Bill proudly served his country in the United States Army.  While in the service, he worked as a teletype operator and MP.  He earned recognitions for sharpshooter with a pistol and expert with a rifle.  While serving in Germany, Bill was nicknamed “MP Shorty”.  Bill retired from Greenridge Village in 2007, where he worked as the Activities Director for the Dementia Unit.  Between his military service and Greenridge Village, Bill also worked as the manager of Joe the Motorist Friend in Harrisburg, manager of Acme Auto Parts in Harrisburg, and part time as an administrative assistant for Dauphin Oil in Carlisle.

Bill was an animal lover and doted on his two birds and the cat.  He enjoyed participating in Gettysburg Reenactments and thrived to lead historical tours.  He was a loving, caring, fun-living man with a great sense of humor.  Bill attended Christian Bible Fellowship in Newville.
