Russell Lee Gutshall, 84 of Elliottsburg, died peacefully and surrounded by his family on March 4, 2026. Born at home on March 30, 1941 to the late Elmer and Serilda (Barkley) Gutshall of Newport, Russ is survived by five children: Donald Gutshall (Lisa), Ronald Gutshall, and Rodger Gutshall – all of WV, Bonnie Rutkowski (Steve) of Orwigsburg, and Becky Sue Murray (Doug) of Liverpool; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and his brother, Ralph Gutshall of Elliottsburg. In addition to his parents, Russ is preceded in death by his two siblings: Charles W. Gutshall and his sister, Edna Gutshall, who died at a very young age.
Russ graduated with the Class of 1959 of Green Park Union. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, and upon his return to civilian life, began his lengthy career as a welder. He worked for Wright’s Welding in New Bloomfield, Kessler, and part time at the Sunoco station in New Bloomfield.
Russ was an avid outdoorsman – hunting, fishing, block shooting. He enjoyed playing bingo and competing in tournament horseshoe throwing. He always smoked a pipe and never turned down the opportunity to go on a “safari” – defined as an adventurous car ride with a mandatory stop to get ice cream!
The visitation for Russ will be held in the calming chapel of Nickel Lochstampfor Family Funeral Home in Loysville on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 from 11 AM to 12 noon. The funeral service will be held at 12 noon, with Pastor Rafe Sanderson officiating. Interment will follow the funeral service at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in Loysville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Landisburg Volunteer Fire Department and/or Landisburg EMS, Inc. – both located at 301 E. Faculty Avenue, Landisburg, PA 17040.
Arrangements entrusted to Nickel Lochstampfor Family Funeral Home, Inc., in Loysville, PA.
