Richard G “Red” Smith, 80, passed away peacefully at home on May 12, 2026. Born on June 15, 1945, to the late Richard D. and Mabel G. (Lyons) Smith, Red is survived by his son, Scott Smith (Jill) of Blain; three step children: Heather Adair (Allen) of Blain, Art Zimmerman II of Lancaster, and Wayne Zimmerman (Emily) of Etters; six grandchildren: Megan and her husband, Eric of Altoona; Ben and Gabby -- both of Blain, Everett, Greyson, and Bennett – all of Etters; a great granddaughter, Mia; and a brother, Chris Smith of Blain. In addition to his parents, Red is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lorraine M. Smith, who died in December 2016.
Red graduated with the 1963 Class of Blain Union High School. He was a dairy farmer until he retired.
Red enjoyed the outdoors and was especially passionate about turkey hunting. He shared his knowledge with many others and helped countless hunters improve their skills and appreciation for the sport. He was also a fan of college football, major league baseball and racing and enjoyed following the games and seasons throughout the years.
Red also enjoyed attending as many of Megan and Ben’s sporting events as he could and was very proud of their many accomplishments and achievements.
After his wife’s passing, Red hated sitting at home so he spent time visiting the Fannettsburg Inn (the FBI), the Blain Hotel and the American Legion where he enjoyed the company of friends, sharing stories and lively conversation with the many people he came to know there. He will be remembered for his love of hunting, sports, storytelling and the friendships he maintained throughout his life.
A Celebration of Red’s Life will be held on Saturday, May 30 at 12 noon at Three Springs Church of the Brethren in Blain, with the retired Rev. John Kipp officiating. The family will receive friends and condolences from 10 AM to 12 noon. Inurnment will be private in Blain Cemetery. The church street address (for GPS) is 944 Three Springs Road, Blain, PA 17006. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Hospice of Central PA, 1320 Linglestown Rd, Harrisburg, PA 17110 and/or TFT Turkeys for Tomorrow https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=T4ENDENUERTZU
