Miriam Emlet Obituary

Miriam L. (Nearhood) Emlet, best known as “Mim,” age 91 of Loysville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 22, 2025, with her son by her side at the Luther Woods Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hatboro.  Born at home on February 13, 1934, to the late Charles Edgar and Geraldine Mae (Prye) Nearhood of Thompsontown, Mim is survived by her two children:  Michael R. Emlet (Jody) of Elkins Park and Mileen K. Emlet of Loysville; two grandchildren:  Lydia M. Gjorvad (Noah) of Lakehurst, NJ and Luke R. Emlet of Lancaster; one nephew and many nieces.  In addition to her parents, Mim was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Marvin Ray Emlet, by her young sister, Arlene, who died in 1935, and by her nephew David Emlet.

Mim grew up in Millerstown and graduated with the Greenwood Joint High School Class of 1952.  She worked as an executive secretary at Nationwide Insurance in Harrisburg from 1952 to 1960, at which time she married Marvin R. Emlet.  From 1966 to 1980, Mim co-owned and operated Emlet’s Grocery in Loysville with her husband.  From 1980 to 1991, she worked as a teller at the First National Bank of Loysville (now Pennian Bank), until she began the job she retired from – Klings Auctions of Landisburg.  She retired in 1996.  Mim was also a very active member of Tressler Memorial Free Lutheran Church of Loysville.

Mim played the piano in Sunday School for many years and sang alto in the Tressler Memorial Free Lutheran Church choir until age 89.  She was a faithful card- and letter-writer to hundreds of family, friends and acquaintances over the years, who were always blessed by her thoughtfulness and encouragements.  Mim’s longest correspondence was with her pen pal Jinny Raven from England – it began when she was 11 years old and continued for 80 years!  Mim had a great sense of humor and a hopeful, optimistic outlook on life.  She was known also for her peanut butter fudge, a coveted dessert at family gatherings.  She loved and took pride in her grandchildren – Lydia and Luke – and had looked forward to becoming a great grandmother this summer.  Mim loved Jesus and was faithful in prayer and reading Scripture daily.  Her vibrant faith was evident to everyone who knew her.

Mim’s funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 30 at Tressler Memorial Free Lutheran Church, 3581 Shermans Valley Road, Loysville, PA  17047.  The closed-casket visitation will be held from 9 to 11 AM, with the funeral service beginning at 11 AM, with Michael R. Emlet officiating.  Interment will follow the funeral service at Restland Cemetery.  Donations can be made in Mim’s name to Tressler Memorial Free Lutheran Church, 3581 Shermans Valley Road, Loysville, PA  17047.
