Michael O. Smith, 66, of New Bloomfield, passed away unexpectantly Thursday September 29, 2022. He was born August 23rd, 1956 in Carlisle.
In addition to his wife of nearly 25 years, Pamela K. (Everitt) Smith of New Bloomfield and two daughters, Rachel Freeman of Mt Holly Springs and Kate Freeman of New Bloomfield, Mike is also survived by his mother, Donna L. (Rice) Smith, a brother, Keith E. (Alisa) Smith, a sister Laurie C. (Dave) Maxwell, all of New Bloomfield and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his father, Clair E. Smith, of New Bloomfield.
Mike was a graduate from West Perry High School in 1974. He also attended the University of Maryland. Before retiring in 2021, Mike worked as a warehouse manager for Trane Technologies. At the time of his passing, he was working part time as a driver for Nissan.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Mike served as a 2nd Class Petty Officer as a Cryptologic Technician from 1978 to 1989. He received a Naval Service Expeditionary Award from President Ronald Reagan. Mike was a Life Member of the New Bloomfield VFW and was very passionate about his work with other veterans and his town. He was a past president and coach of the New Bloomfield Youth Soccer Association and he volunteered for various other organizations in New Bloomfield. He currently still holds baseball records at West Perry High School both from 1974: Batting Average .550 and Consecutive Hits for 10.
Mike enjoyed wood working, such as making garden boxes for friends/family, gardening, watching any kind of sports but mostly baseball and Penn State football, and most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
Viewing and services will be held with full military honors at Tressler Free Lutheran Church in Loysville on Tuesday October 4, 2022. The viewing will be from 10am-12pm and the services will begin at 12:30pm. Afterwards, his family welcomes you to join them for refreshments located in the basement of the church. Mike’s family asks if you would like to send donations in honor of him, please consider organizations such as the New Bloomfield VFW, The Nobody’s Cats Foundation in Camp Hill or The Wounded Warrior Project.
