Mary H. Ickes, age 82 of Loysville, gained her angel wings on October 13, 2025 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Carlisle on May 31, 1943, to the late Harold Ritter and Lean Mae (McMillen) Ickes, Mary is survived by her two sisters: Lucinda Dum (Arthur) of Shermans Dale and Ruby Hommas (Larry) of Mechanicsburg; and many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
Mary graduated with the Class of 1961 of Green Park High School and continued her education at Toledo University, from which she graduated in 1965 with her bachelor’s degree in physical education. Mary taught Physical Education in Central Dauphin School District – both elementary and intermediate – for over 35 years. She retired in 2001.
Mary grew up and naturally became a very active member at Tressler Memorial Free Lutheran Church in Loysville. Throughout the years, she served as a VBS teacher, Council Member, choir member, and Ladies Auxiliary member, where she chaired activities such as providing Christmas gifts for needy families, packing and donating to the Graham ministry shoeboxes, and volunteering with Join Hands Ministry. Although a quiet and private person, Mary was well loved and her “servant” attitude was so refreshing.
In her retirement, Mary was active with the Dauphin County Retired Teachers. Within that organization, she was a Board Member and the co-chairperson of the Community Service Committee. Her passion for service was again seen in her actions. In recognition of her many years and examples of service, she was to receive the John Dillon Award for Service at the November monthly meeting.
Mary’s funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025 at Tressler Memorial Free Lutheran Church, 3581 Shermans Valley Road, Loysville, PA at 11 AM, with Pastor Brian Stambaugh officiating. The casket will be closed and there will be no viewing. The family has chosen to arrive immediately prior to the funeral service and will accept condolences only after the interment. Interment will immediately follow the funeral service at Restland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to Tressler Memorial Free Lutheran Church, 3581 Shermans Valley Road, Loysville, PA 17047.
