John W. Sundy, Sr., 72 of Steelton, died unexpectedly at home on January 21, 2026. Born in Carlisle on July 12, 1953, to the late Samuel G. Sundy, Sr. and Carrie H. (Burd) Sundy of Loysville, John is survived by two children: John W. Sundy, Jr. or Mechanicsburg and Jennifer E. Volchko of Elizabethtown; six grandchildren: Dante, Ava, Jemma, Savannah, Colson and Cailynn; four siblings: Samuel G. Sundy, Jr. (Carolyn) of Mechanicsburg, Sandy L. Goshorn of Carlisle, Robert E. Sundy (Tina) and Sharon K. Gross – both of Loysville; and his mother, Carrie H. (Burd) Sundy of Loysville. In addition to his father, John is preceded in death by a daughter, Khristen M. Sundy, who died in 2003.
After attending high school, John enlisted and proudly served in the United States Army from 1974 to 1975, where he earned the following decorations, medals, badges, commendations, citations, and campaign ribbons: Expert Marksmanship Qualification of M16 and First Class Grenade, indicating successful completion of the grenade qualification course. Upon return to civilian life, John started his long career as a truck driver. His career included too many employers to list here, but he retired in 2019, after eight years of service, from Atlas Roofing Company in Camp Hill.
In his free time, he enjoyed hunting deer and small game, fishing, and building, running, and maintaining Sportsman and Late Model race cars. He was the Chief of Ickesburg and Steelton Fire Departments. He belonged to the American Legion Post 272 in Wormleysburg, and the Dutch Club in Steelton.
Funeral services for John will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2026 in the calming chapel of Nickel Lochstampfor Family Funeral Home, Inc. The visitation will have the casket closed and will be from 11 AM to 1 PM. The funeral service will begin at 1 PM, with Pastor Rafe Sanderson, lead pastor of New Life Assembly of God Church in Landisburg, officiating. Military honors will be presented at the funeral home.
