John Detrick Obituary

John E. Detrick, age 78 of Millerstown, left this Earth and joined his Heavenly Father on September 27, 2023 after a lengthy illness.  Born in Wayne, MI on May 11, 1945 to the late John W. and Rachael E. (Wert) Detrick, John is survived by his beautiful wife of 44 years, Charlynn V. (Rhoads) Detrick; two siblings:  Penelope O’Strowski and Terry M. Detrick, both of Walton, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews, whom he loved as his own children.

John grew up as a military brat, and graduated from Ka Leilehua High School, Class of 1964 in Honolulu, HI.  John joined the military and enlisted in the US Marine Corp and served from 1965 to 1969, during which time he earned the M-14 Marksman Rifleman Badge, National Defense Service Medal, and two Good Conduct Medals.  Upon his return to civilian duty, he began driving truck and retired from Preston in 1978.  He was a Man of God and an active member of Church of the Living Christ in Loysville.  He was also a huge train enthusiast.  He traveled the country attending and participating in train meets.  As the photo shows, John built realistic small-scale trains.  John was a self-taught machinist and huge supporter of train events.  John also was a passionate outdoorsman.  He earned the nickname “Killer” for dropping a deer with a hit between the eyes during archery season.

Funeral services for John will be held on Monday, October 2, 2023 at Church of the Living Christ in Loysville.  The funeral service will be at 11 AM, with Pastor Ethan Swartz officiating.  There will be an hour of visitation from 10 to 11 AM.  Interment will follow the funeral service with military honors in Church of the Living Christ Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John’s name to the Building Fund of the Church of the Living Christ, 2401 Fort Robinson Road, Loysville, PA  17047.
