Fern V. (Smith) Freeman, age 90 of Elliottsburg, passed away on November 11, 2024. Born at home on January 6, 1934, to the late Harry H. and Martha Pauline (Johnson) Smith, Sr. of Stony Point in Perry County, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. In addition to her parents, Fern is preceded in death by her devoted husband of 70 years, Wayne S. Freeman, who died in 2023; her four siblings: Harry H. Smith, Jr., Ruth R. Peterson, Roy W. Smith, and Paul E. Smith; and son in law, Fred C. Noye. Fern is survived by four children: Debra Noye, Mark Freeman, and Matthew (Tina) Freeman, all of Elliottsburg, and Luke (Audrey) Freeman of Carlisle; five grandchildren: Jeremy (Mayes) Noye of Upper Saddle River, NJ; Andrew (Angie) Noye of Bluffton, SC, Rachel Freeman of Mt. Holly Springs, Kate Freeman of New Bloomfield, and Kyle Freeman of Elliottsburg; two step-grandchildren: Denise (Knute) Brayford of Frackville and Cheryl (Jay) Stover of Mechanicsburg; and twelve great grandchildren: Grace, Katarina, Valentina, Edyn, Isla, Ainsley, Aaron, Emma, Addison, Aiden, Gracie, and Jack.
Fern graduated with the 1950 Class of Green Park Union in Landisburg and had been an active member of Tressler Memorial Lutheran Church. She was once head of Church Council and taught children’s Sunday School. In addition to raising a family and running a household, Fern was a Perry County Auditor, Tyrone Township tax collector, and she did census surveys for Spring and Tyrone Townships. She volunteered as a 4-H Leader teaching young girls and a few boys sewing, cooking, baking, and canning skills. In her rare spare time, she enjoyed reading magazines.
Funeral services for Fern will be held on Tuesday, November 19 at Tressler Memorial Free Lutheran Church, 3581 Shermans Valley Road, Loysville, PA 17047. The visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11 AM. The funeral service will begin at 11 AM, with Rev. Bill Pipp officiating. Rev. Bill Pipp is the senior pastor at Snyder’s Church in New Bloomfield. Interment will follow the funeral service at Restland Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Restland Cemetery, c/o Rose Heisey, 1342 Valley Road, Marysville, PA 17053.
