Dennis L Shope, Sr. of Shermans Dale, age 77, joined his Heavenly Father on November 16, 2020. Den was born in Lewistown on September 17, 1943 to the late Neil Edward and Helen Doris (Towsey) Shope. He was an outdoors man – both hunting and gardening -- and always provided for his family. Dennis was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. In addition to his parents, Dennis is preceded in death by a grandson, Tyler Shope.
Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Lou Ann (Landis) Shope, and two sons: Dennis (Crystal) Shope, Jr. of Landisburg and Justin (Lori) Shope of Shermans Dale. In addition to his wife and sons, Dennis is survived by three grandson: Brandon (Kaitlyn) Shope of Landisburg, and Jaxen and Chaysen Shope of Shermans Dale; and a great grandson Owen Shope.
Den is also survived by six siblings: Larry (Pat) Shope, Fred (Mary) Shope, Andy (Virginia) Shope, Sr. and Jean (Walter) Kirk – all of Shermans Dale, Jill Kline of Carlisle, and Nancy Shope of Canton, MI.
Den was a member of the Vibrant a Christian Church in Mechanicsburg, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Perry County Old Iron, and the Williams Grove Historical Steam Engine Association. He bravely served his country in the Army and earned the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal. He retired as a crane operator in 2006 from PP&G.
Den loved to eat. He loved to go hunting in the woods, where he could be tracked by his family as they collected the candy wrappers and soda cans. He also helped with the canning of the crops from the garden. He helped Lou Ann put up corn and grape jelly – but only after he had tasted each batch to assure all of its goodness.
A private viewing and funeral service will be held in the newly renovated chapel at Nickel Lochstampfor Family Funeral Home, followed by internment at Mt. Gilead Cemetery in Shermans Dale. Due to the recent outbreaks of COVID, masks will be required and social distancing maintained.
Arrangements entrusted to Nickel-Lochstampfor Family Funeral Home, Inc.
