Betty E (Gutshall) Sanderson, age 96, received her angel’s wings on June 5, 2020. Born on September 1, 1923 to the late Clarence and Luella (Shuman) Gutshall, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband, Amos B Sanderson, four sisters: Vada Shambaugh, Helen Shumaker, Marie Hess and Darlene Sharp; and two brothers: Donald and Carl Gutshall.
Betty was loved by her family and the community of Blain. She will be sorely missed. She is survived by three sons: Jerry Sanderson, and wife Linda of Millerstown, Richard Sanderson, and wife Kathy of Millerstown, and Terry Sanderson of Blain. She leaves behind four grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Betty was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Blain. She was also very active in the community. Many residents of Blain considered Betty and her late husband, Amos, to be role models for three generations of kids in Blain. She was a great cook, lending her BBQ recipe to the annual Blain Picnic. She looked forward to the gathering together of the community residents at the Blain Yard Sale. It was like a homecoming. She wrote poetry and was known for her favorite response, “You better believe it!”
In addition to raising a family, running a household and being an active community member, Betty also was a factory worker in Blain Dress Factory and the tax collector for Blain Borough. Betty was also a member of the Blain Ladies Auxiliary, Blain Fire Department, and served as the Grand Marshall in Blain’s 250th Parade and Celebrations.
A public viewing will be held Wednesday, June 10 from 5 to 7 pm at Nickel Lochstampfor Family Funeral Home, Inc in Loysville. This viewing will be for friends and family to pay their respects to Betty. Due to COVID concerns, the immediate family will not be present to receive condolences. The COVID policies of maximum 25 people in the building at the same time and social distancing will be observed. Masks are preferred, but not required. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.
