Arlene Kretzing Obituary

Arlene D. (Spotts) Kretzing, 97, formerly of Landisburg and Shermans Dale, died Wednesday, August 27, 2025 in Carlisle.  Born at home on December 28, 1927, to the late Elmer B. and Carrie V. (Rambo) Spotts of Shermans Dale, Arlene is survived by her two children:  David Kretzing (Debbie) of Springfield, OR and Anita “Skeeter” Todd (Steven) of Shermans Dale; a daughter-in-law, Karen Kretzing of Landisburg; five grandchildren:  Larry Kretzing (Felicia) of Sunbury, Brian Todd (Brett) of Shermans Dale, Kelsey Theobold (Fletcher) of Harrisburg, Andrew Todd (Marisa) of Shermans Dale, and Allyn “Ally” Kapp (Jeremy) of Marysville; six great grandchildren:  Claire, Max, Russell, Gabriel, Josiah, and Benjamin; and one brother:  Kelvin Spotts of New Bloomfield. In addition to her parents, Arlene is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 68 years, Max Kretzing; a son, Daniel Kretzing and two siblings:  Glenna Nulton and Harold Spotts.

Arlene graduated with the class of 1945 of New Bloomfield High School and continued her education at Shippensburg State Teachers College, from which she graduated in 1948.   She began her teaching career in Steelton and later taught Special Education with the Capital Area Intermediate Unit, from which she retired in 1987 after many years of service.   In addition to teaching, Arlene, along with her husband Max, maintained the family farm on Warm Spring Road for 62 years.  She was an active member of the Mt Zion Free Lutheran Church, Madison Grange 2083 and the Perry Historians.  Arlene enjoyed traveling the United States as well as various world sites including China, Costa Rica and Europe with her husband and friends.  She also enjoyed quilting as part of the church Quilting Ministry, of which she still participated at the age of 96.  Arlene also enjoyed volunteering with the Perry Historians Library and enjoyed researching and sharing the genealogy of her family.  She will be lovingly remembered for her pies (which her family gladly ate), her love of ice cream, cappuccinos, and candy. She loved playing cards and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren – particularly teaching them how to make “Grandma’s homemade applesauce.”

The visitation for Arlene will be held on Wednesday, September 3 from 9 to 11 AM at Mt. Zion Free Lutheran Church, Landisburg.  The funeral service will begin at 11 AM, and will be officiated by Pastor Brian Stambaugh.  Interment will follow the funeral service in Mt Zion Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Mt Zion Free Lutheran Church, PO Box 904, Loysville, PA  17047.
