Clifford Rose Obituary

Clifford A. Rose, Jr., age 86 of Landisburg, passed away on March 15, 2024, with his wife by his side.  Born in Jackson, MS on June 21, 1937 to the late Clifford A. and Elizabeth (Broome) Rose, Cliff was a career Navy man, specializing in electronic and software intensive systems.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Peggy (Lyons) Rose.

After high school graduation, Cliff proudly attended and graduated with honors from the United States Naval Academy in 1959.  He continued his collegiate journey by earning his Electrical Engineering Degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1967, which was then followed by earning his PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from George Washington University in 1975.  He also published six papers in technical journals, all within the field of computer performance measurement and analysis.

Upon his graduation from the United States Naval Academy, Cliff began his shipboard duties in the United States Navy as a Communications Officer, Weapons Officer, and Operations Officer.  Upon completion of his master’s degree at MIT, Cliff was the Program Manager of AN/BQQ-5 Sonar for the Naval Sea Systems Command.  Upon completion of his PhD from George Washington University, Cliff worked as the Program Manager and Department Head of the Naval Research and Development Center in San Diego.  He then became the Program Manager of Surveillance Towed Array Systems for the Naval Electronic Systems Command.  The next career step for Cliff was as Program Director of first the Undersea Surveillance Systems, and then the Navy Communications Systems for the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command.  Cliff retired at the rank of Captain in July of 1987, after actively and proudly serving his country for 28 years.  During that same period, he earned the following decorations, medal, badges, citations, and campaign ribbons:  Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

After a successful 28-year Navy career, Cliff began his civilian career as the Manager of Software Engineering for TRW, followed by Project Manager for Naval and Maritime Systems Division of Raytheon Systems, Co., and retired the second time as the Manager of IT Security of Electronics Systems Division of Raytheon.  Cliff loved to travel – first with the Navy, and then personally as a civilian with his wife.  He loved wine and the obvious places to travel for good wine were Napa and Sonoma Valleys – many times!  He became a wine consultant for two San Diego restaurants.  Cliff and Peggy also traveled to various destinations in Europe.  Cliff loved to spend time with his dog, Honey.  She was at his side throughout the day.  Cliff always enjoyed long walks with his dogs and Peggy.  He also enjoyed watching the wildlife from the dining room table, after he moved to Pennsylvania.  Every night was Date Night for Cliff and Peggy – as they enjoyed before dinner drinks and pairing their favorite wines with their meals.
